Mike Rowland, the founder of True Comfort Designs, starting in the industry in 2010.
It all began when his wife and him purchased their first home together in Phoenix, AZ.
They purchased this home to start a family. He will never forgot his first summer experience. Wife was pregnant, and 2 out of the 4 bedrooms where 10-15 degrees warmer then all the other rooms in the house. One of those hot rooms was going to be the baby’s room. It was unbearable living conditions. Not to mention they had abnormal amounts of dust and allergies with high energy bills. Mike knew nothing about HVAC or Home Performance at this time. But he knew something was wrong with the home. At this point, they were looking at each other thinking, what kind of house did we get ourselves into?
So he decided to have an independent energy audit done through his local power utility company.
They had discovered that the homes duct system was under sized, not sealed, and was never completed during the construction phase. The master bedroom supply duct was about 7″ short from the drywall. When they removed the register, they could literally grab hands full of fiberglass insulation from the attic. They were breathing fiberglass, attic dust and all the other junk thats in our attics. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified some fibers used in fiberglass as possible human carcinogens (cancer causing agents).
Now that they knew more about their homes poor performance issues, they felt more sick then ever living in it.
Unfortunately, most people who buy a home, don’t discover these at all or they just simply just get used to it. Not this home. They were motivated in getting it fixed asap especially before the baby was born. They choose a very reputable contractor who completed the duct system and modified so it could be adjusted, room by room, in order to balance the temperatures. The same day the duct system was fixed, they instantly saw a change in the environment. Rooms were much closer in temperature, lots of dust went away, energy bill went down considerable, and happy wife happy life. Then they upgraded all the windows in the house, added insulation, and air sealed the home to keep their conditioned clean air inside where it belongs.
Because they upgraded their windows, insulation and tighten the homes envelope, they now had new issues that occurred. Their HVAC comfort system was now over sized, short cycling, using more energy then needed and was hard on all the components. The house was too tight and the cooling and heating requirements had changed. They started getting possibly mildew/mold growing in the showers. It needed fresh air delivered into the home. They then had their first child, who was hospitalized twice with Pneumonia his first two years of winter. They knew they weren’t done cleaning up their air. So they replaced the HVAC system, sized it correctly, upgraded their filtration, added purification and fresh filtered makeup air. They now have three healthy boys, who don’t get allergies or sick as often.
Once they fixed those issues, they had the best environment one could have.
Their home gave Mike so much passion & motivation for the industry, He wanted to educate homeowners and improve their environments. So Mike went to school, got B.P.I (Building Performance Institute) certified in home performance and building envelope, became an independent energy auditor for both utility companies in his area. After a year of auditing, He then transitioned to working for the same HVAC contractor who fixed his home, and has been at that company now for last 8 years. They were highly respected not only by the utility companies, but the entire HVAC community.
In the last 15 years, Mike has been in over 5,000 homes.
He has replaced over 2,000 HVAC comfort systems, performed over 1,000 Manual J heat load calculations, and upgraded many duct systems to handle the clients needs.
Mike has the knowledge and experience to design high-performance heating, ventilating, & air conditioning systems. Let us design your comfort system that will deliver true comfort.
